Jansons did the same program with Wiener Philharmoniker in 2005. Schoenberg's last work and the beginning of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 sounded connected when played consecutively. Makela used the Vienna Universal Edition. The string ensemble was lively and focused, and the concertmaster's solo was excellent. Their composition was terrific. In the final few bars, I felt a deep sense of calm and tranquility at the music's most brilliant and beautiful peak.

In the following Mahler, the music was carefully interpreted, and the orchestra responded beautifully; each section was rich and at times unique. Makela's takt became more apparent towards the finale, and the strings shone; the horn theme, the dynamic bass, the repeated brass, the different theme crossover, the tone, and the ensemble were Makela's Mahler. He flexed as the cymbals hit, and the sound spread through Carnegie Hall. Makela's outstanding conducting and the Concertgebouw Orchestra's response were excellent. Every solo and ensemble was terrific, and the finale sounded like a hymn of humanity, starting with the short 60-minute violin Cosmo. From the first time I heard it with Zubin Mehta in the 90s, I came to know Mahler through Mäkelä, who will lead the Chicago Symphony and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The repertoire Mäkelä selected connects present and future audiences and brings it to life. Please do Shostakovich 4th!

SCHOENBERG Verklärte Nacht
G. MAHLER Symphony No. 1

@klausmakelaofficial @concertgebouworkest @carnegiehall
