The name Classicasobi combines classical and asobi, a Japanese word associated with play, freedom, and an open-ended engagement with experience.
For Classicasobi, criticism is part of that play:
a way to return to sound after it has disappeared,
to question what was heard,
and let new meanings emerge.
Listening leads beyond music toward a broader exploration of sound, perception, creativity, and consciousness.
What can listening do to us?
A singular consciousness observing sound.
Classicasobi is a Japanese writer based in New York. Born in rural Japan, he began studying music early and explored many instruments. In Tokyo, he focused his studies on French modernist music. He studied saxophone with Yoshiyuki Hattori, piano with Akio Hiramine, music theory with Yoshihiro Abiko, and musicology with Tsutomu Nasuda.
His encounters with musicians such as Alfred Brendel, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Gidon Kremer, Martha Argerich, and Simon Rattle, as well as his experiences hearing performances by artists deeply connected to the historically informed performance movement—including Christoph Prégardien, Andreas Staier, The Tallis Scholars, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt—further shaped his understanding of music and listening.
He later studied musicology at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, expanding his interests from early music and modernism to contemporary music and electronic sound practices.
Today, he continues to encounter music across New York and beyond, moving between concert halls, intimate experimental spaces, opera houses, galleries, and wherever sound takes place.

Classicasobi=音を観察する単一の意識
クラシックアソビはニューヨークを拠点に活動する日本人ライター。日本の地方に生まれ、幼い頃から音楽を学び、さまざまな楽器に触れてきました。その後、日本でフランス近代音楽を中心に学び、サクソフォンを服部義之氏、ピアノを平峯章夫氏、音楽理論を安彦善博氏、音楽史を那須田務氏に師事。
アルフレッド・ブレンデル、アンネ＝ゾフィー・ムター、ギドン・クレーメル、マルタ・アルゲリッチ、サイモン・ラトルなどの演奏を体験し、クリストフ・プレガルディエン、アンドレアス・シュタイアー、タリス・スコラーズ、ニコラウス・アーノンクールらの歴史的な演奏実践にも触れてきた。
その後、ニューヨーク市立大学ブルックリン校で音楽学を学び、古楽、モダニズム、現代音楽、そして電子音響へと関心の領域を広げ、コンサートホール、小さな実験スペース、オペラハウス、ギャラリー、そして音が存在する場所へ足を運び、聴収体験が人の認識を変える実践を続けている。

「遊び」とは、音との自由で開かれた、終わりのない関わり方。
音を聴き、そこに身を置き、問い、考える。
その感覚は意識を揺さぶり、やがて世界の見え方を変えていく。
聴くことは、私たちに何を与えるか。
