Royal Concertgebouw and Klaus Mäkelä at Carnegie Hall

Royal Concertgebouw and Klaus Mäkelä at Carnegie Hall

Klaus returned to Carnegie Hall with the Concertgebouw. Last year’s Paris Philharmonic performance was too unruly to reveal his true self. How would he satisfy New York’s high standards? His stance at the podium reminded me of Rattle, and when he gripped the podium with his left hand, it almost looked like a gesture of victory. I witnessed the early days when Klaus's bow nurtured countless memorable performances at the Concertgebouw. Just as with Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 in Berlin, great Romantic works, contemporary pieces, and numerous ensembles will unfold in the future. Starting with a contemporary work depicting a woman’s pregnancy and childbirth, he shared this with us in America—a day that will be invaluable for future classical music fans and composers. I look forward to Klaus's future with the Concertgebouw.
