Changing Listening — Feldman & Brown at 100

Changing Listening — Feldman & Brown at 100

What do we listen to, and how?

Time stopped, and I could no longer move, caught by the sound of the viola.
And then, the sound of that small bell pierced my chest.

The third sound stopped closer than I had expected.
And I could not believe that time.
That singer was excessive, tearing the world of the space apart.
The invisible consciousness of everyone that made him that way.

I explore sound and listen to my own voice.

I Decided to Go to Feldman.

A festival across New York City celebrating the centennial birthdays of Morton Feldman and Earle Brown of the New York School, a movement that kept changing the way we listen. Across 17 concerts, talks, and special events, the festival explores two composers who profoundly reshaped 20th-century music.

The New York School

In 1950s New York, artists from different fields — music, painting, poetry, dance — met, drank, talked, and created together, tearing apart the conventions of the time one after another. Feldman met Cage at a concert of Webern at Carnegie Hall, was deeply impressed by his work, and suddenly became close to him. Through Cage, he was then introduced, one after another, to the central figures tearing everything apart.

You don't have to write a piece.
Painting shows paint.
Dance has no story. It shows movement.
Poetry turns whatever happens to be around into drama.

Not what is being depicted, but what are you listening to?

It was a shock.
