Daniel Schreiner — Freeing Sound from Fixed Categories

Schreiner has performed with ensembles including Contemporaneous and InfraSound while working across composition, sound art, and graphic scores. He also studied Studio Art at Williams College, where he has connected painting directly to music by transforming visual works into graphic scores. His work reflects a desire to free sound from fixed categories and explore what sound can become at the intersection of nature, the body, time, queerness, and transcendence.

Beyond the 88 Keys — Sound as a Continuous Spectrum

Schreiner describes his approach in a single sentence: “I’m often confined to 88 keys, but I think of sound as a continuous spectrum.” The piano has a clear boundary in its 88 keys, but sound itself is not divided by that boundary. Between the pitches of the keyboard lie innumerable gradations, while overtones, noise, vibration, electronic sound, and environmental sound open onto an even broader continuum. What Schreiner seeks to expand is not simply the expressive capacity of the piano, but the very range of what we perceive as “sound.”

Unmoored — Music Without a Fixed Ground

That idea takes form in his debut album Unmoored, released by New Focus Recordings on August 7, 2026. The album features works by Luciano Leite Barbosa, Brittany J. Green, Sato Matsui, Ramin Roshandel, and Nina Shekhar. It is more than a collection of contemporary piano works. The word Unmoored suggests being released from one's moorings, or losing one's footing, and the album evokes a sensation of music slipping free from the fixed boundaries of a single instrument, a single place, or a single meaning.

Sato Matsui — Oiseau lunaire

The album opens with Sato Matsui’s Oiseau lunaire, conceived during France’s COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. The work begins with cold, isolated sounds, erupts into intense chromatic bursts, and eventually returns to numb stillness. Embedded in this movement of sound is the sensation of a human being confined.

Ramin Roshandel — Three Short Dreams

Written in 2021

I. Introvert, Expressive, Rubato
II. Senza misura, Ad libitum
III. Mantra

Improvisatory gestures that sweep across the piano from the low register to the high register suddenly appear and disappear out of the darkness. This creates the feeling of “moving from one dream to the next.” Rather than depicting a dream, the piece uses the piano's movement to create the sensation of time and place suddenly shifting, as they do in a dream.

Roshandel is a composer, sitar player, and photographer who lived in Iran before moving to the United States in 2017. He explores the boundaries between Persian modal musical materials and atonal, non-modal music.

Luciano Leite Barbosa — Chords II, III, and VIII

Luciano Leite Barbosa’s Chords II, III, and VIII draws on three paintings by the Abstract Expressionist artist Joan Mitchell. The chords and resonances are not simply there to carry a melody; they overlap like brushstrokes and colors, inviting us to hear sound not as melody, but as texture and color.

Brittany J. Green — bluedream

In Brittany J. Green’s bluedream, acoustic piano is combined with electronics and field recordings Green made herself in North Carolina. As the piano, electronic sounds, and natural sounds converge, the boundaries between nature, machine, and body begin to shift. The distinction between the instrument's sound and the environment's becomes increasingly difficult to locate.

Nina Shekhar — Vocalise

In Nina Shekhar’s Vocalise, a voice that initially resembles a whisper gradually grows stronger, struggling to maintain itself as it is nearly absorbed by the surrounding sounds. Emerging from the uncertainty is the image of an individual attempting to affirm their own presence.

Sato Matsui — Oiseau solaire

In the final work, Sato Matsui’s Oiseau solaire, the music suddenly acquires a powerful sense of movement, generating joy and exhilaration, as though something previously held back is moving outward. From the confinement of Oiseau lunaire to Oiseau solaire, sound itself seems to leave its moorings and surge forward.

The Six Works — A Journey Toward Losing One’s Ground

Taken as a whole, the six works form a trajectory that moves from isolation and disorientation toward dreams and uncertainty, before the boundaries of sound itself begin to dissolve, an individual voice emerges, and finally a sense of release appears. As the sonic field expands from piano to electronics, field recordings, noise, body, voice, and space, the contours of what we normally call “music” begin to change as well.

What Does It Mean to Be Free?

Unmoored is therefore not an album that simply speaks about “free music.” It lets us physically experience the question of what freedom might mean as we listen. Through the act of listening, the ground beneath us—the place from which we believe we are listening—gradually begins to loosen. And in that moment, sounds that we had previously placed outside music begin to enter our hearing.

When Schreiner moves beyond the 88 keys, it is our sense of hearing itself.

New Focus Recordings — Daniel Schreiner『Unmoored』

Daniel Schreiner――

『Unmoored』――

Sato Matsui — 《Oiseau lunaire》

Ramin Roshandel — 《Three Short Dreams》

I. Introvert, Expressive, Rubato
II. Senza misura, Ad libitum
III. Mantra

Luciano Leite Barbosa — 《Chords II, III, and VIII》

Brittany J. Green — 《bluedream》

Nina Shekhar — 《Vocalise》

Sato Matsui — 《Oiseau solaire》
