### [The BIOMES Release at Roulette](https://roulette.org/event/biomes-album-release-katherine-young/?ref=classicasobi.com)

On September 17, at Roulette in Brooklyn, the album release performance will feature Yarn/Wire performing *BIOMES 6.0*, a world premiere by Young and Olivia Block using tape machines, and an improvisation by Young, Brian Chase, and Ben LaMar Gay. What is worth hearing here is not “contemporary music about nature.” The question is how far music itself can change, multiply, and become an environment—how far it can begin to behave like a living organism. That is what Young is exploring through BIOMES.

### When Sound Becomes an Ecosystem

This is where the real fascination of Young’s work lies. She is not presenting “environmental issues” or “sustainability” as messages within her music. Rather, she is experimenting with a more fundamental question: if the world is constituted through complex relationships, how can that complexity itself become sound? Instead of sounds simply being placed one after another, they multiply, overlap, transform, and change in response to one another. The resulting music does not so much depict nature as make sound itself seem to become an ecosystem.

### Turning Nature into a Musical System

That sensibility unfolds on its largest scale in “BIOMES,” an ongoing project that began in 2018\. BIOMES is not so much a collection of works about nature as an attempt to transform the mechanisms of the natural world itself into a method of composition. Young gathers photographs, texts, musical notation, field recordings, videos, drawings, maps, and other materials related to different “biomes”—deserts, wetlands, forests, oyster reefs, the human microbiome, and more. She then transforms each environment's characteristics into rules that determine performers’ actions, sonic density, timbre, and interaction. In other words, she is not depicting nature through sound; she is turning the relationships and complex movements found within nature into a generative system for music itself.

### A Music That Never Stays the Same

This is why BIOMES is not a project in which the same “piece” is performed each time. Even with the same source materials, different performers, spaces, and methods can produce entirely different music. Young numbers the works BIOMES 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, and so on, repeatedly exploring a single ecosystem from different perspectives. The visual operations she proposes—“zooming in” toward the microscopic and “zooming out” toward an atmospheric scale—are also incorporated into the musical structure.

### From Organisms to Sound

The forthcoming album *BIOMES* brings together three works from this long-running exploration: *BIOMES 6.0*, *BIOMES 8.1*, and *BIOMES 7.4*. The album features Yarn/Wire, Olivia Block, Ben LaMar Gay, Tim Daisy, and Brian Chase, drummer for Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In particular, *BIOMES 7.4* begins with Young and Ben LaMar Gay generating sounds through improvisation; Young then edits those recordings and invites Brian Chase to add percussion. Her editing shifts the scale of the music itself, moving from an extreme close-up of a single organism to a distant view of a vast landscape.

### Beyond Ecology

Young’s 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship was another major recognition of her work as a composer. But describing her music only through words such as “community,” “sustainability,” or “ecology” would miss its most stimulating aspect. The real novelty of Young’s work lies not in presenting an idea or an ideology, but in the very act of transforming familiar instruments and sonic materials into an entirely different listening experience. BIOMES is an ongoing compositional experiment that expands this idea to the enormous scale of an ecosystem.

### Beyond the Instrument

[Katherine Young](https://katherineyoung.info/?ref=classicasobi.com) is an American composer and performer whose work moves across composition, improvisation, electronic music, and sound art, with the bassoon at its center. To understand her music, recognize that she does not treat the bassoon simply as a melodic instrument. She works with the breath, the sound of pressing the keys, overtones, noise, and even minute amplified vibrations as musical material, combining them with electronics and improvisation to draw unexpected sounds from the instrument. She describes her music as being shaped by “expressive noises, curious timbres, and kinetic structures,” and indeed, there is something profoundly physical and bodily about the newness of her sound—something that refuses to fit neatly into any existing genre.

### The BIOMES Release at Roulette

### When Sound Becomes an Ecosystem

### Turning Nature into a Musical System

### A Music That Never Stays the Same

### From Organisms to Sound

### Beyond Ecology

### Beyond the Instrument

Olivia Block

Ben LaMar Gay

Yarn/Wire
