## 1\. Is Medea a villain, or a woman who has been betrayed?

Medea loved Jason so deeply that she used her own powers to help him achieve his goals, even committing murder for his sake. Believing that they would marry, she left her homeland, had two children with him, and built a life together.

Yet Jason chooses to marry Glauce, the princess of Corinth, to serve his own ambitions. For Medea, this is more than the end of a romantic relationship. It is a devastating rejection of everything she has devoted herself to: her love, her sacrifices, and the life they have built together.

But understanding her anger does not justify her revenge. In the end, Medea takes her vengeance against Jason so far that she kills her own children.

The audience can sympathize with her suffering but cannot accept her actions. Medea is both a victim deserving of compassion and a terrifying perpetrator. The inability to separate these two aspects of her character is what gives the story its depth.

## 2\. Music portrays the disintegration of human reason

Cherubini’s music is compelling because it does more than set emotions to beautiful melodies. The orchestra itself reveals the characters’ inner lives and evokes the sense of impending catastrophe before it unfolds.

In Act I, tensions around Glauce’s wedding intensify as Medea and Jason confront each other. In Act II, a bassoon that accompanies the grief of Medea’s handmaid, Neris, brings moments of stillness to the turbulent drama.

Then comes Act III. Torn between her love for her children and her desire for revenge, Medea gradually loses her reason. A minor-key prelude and ominous chromatic string movements create a foreboding atmosphere as the music steadily gathers force and drives the drama toward its tragic conclusion.

Here, music is not an accompaniment that merely explains emotion. It gives form to the very process by which the human mind begins to unravel.

## 3\. A work from the eighteenth century that still speaks to the present

Premiered in 1797, *Medea* emerged during the Enlightenment, when ideals of reason and equality were gaining ground. Yet even as these ideals were being articulated, women remained limited in the social and economic freedoms available to them.

A descendant of Helios, the sun god, Medea possesses extraordinary power even within the world of myth. Nevertheless, she cannot escape her consuming love for Jason. Though she can act of her own will, her emotions drive her toward destruction.

Medea is not a woman who waits for a man to choose her. She makes her own decisions and ultimately commits an irreversible act. This character-driven drama, centered on the fury of a humiliated woman, also anticipates the powerful and complex female figures who would later emerge in Romantic opera.

How far can a person change after being betrayed by someone they have loved deeply? At what point does love turn into hatred? Are there acts that remain unforgivable, no matter how understandable the circumstances behind them?

The more we try to understand Medea, the more horrifying her actions become. Through music and theater, we experience the boundary at which emotions we can understand give rise to acts we can scarcely comprehend.
