[PROGRAM:](https://cso.org/performances/26-27/cso/makela-conducts-sibelius-shostakovich/?ref=classicasobi.com)

Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) — Symphony No. 7 (1924)
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) — Symphony No. 4 (1935–36)

In September, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Klaus Mäkelä, performs Sibelius’s Symphony No. 7 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4\. This is Mäkelä’s first residency as the incoming Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He considered No. 4 Shostakovich’s “ultimate masterpiece” and described the gestures of its music as modern, “as if it were written yesterday.”

Written in 1935–36, No. 4 has sudden sounds, marches, waltzes, birdsongs, and sharp sonorities within its enormous forces and complex structure. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra introduces it as Shostakovich “at his most wild and audacious.” Mäkelä places No. 4 at the beginning of his new relationship with Chicago. To cut into the impulses and collisions taking place inside the immense body of Chicago, Mäkelä turns to No. 4.

Sep 24–26, 2026
Chicago Symphony Center, 220 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60604, USA
Klaus Mäkelä, conductor

PROGRAM:

Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) — Symphony No. 7 (1924)
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) — Symphony No. 4 (1935–36)
